Family history and genetic risks
Family history plays an important role, as evidence suggests there is a genetic component to colon cancer. The Genetics and Risk Assessment Unit at Nassif Regional Cancer Center provides counseling, risk assessment and genetic testing for individuals at risk due to family history.
Age, weight and exercise
The risk of colon cancer increases with age, and lifestyle factors such as being overweight or obese contribute to this risk. Lack of exercise is also a known factor, underscoring the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and an active lifestyle.
Dietary habits, smoking and alcohol
Dietary choices, especially eating large amounts of red or processed meat, are associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Smoking, a known risk factor for lung cancer, is linked to colon cancer. Alcohol consumption is recommended in moderation, with specific limits to reduce risks.
